94 business firms found violating fire code

THE City Fire Department discovered 94 business establishments that violated the Fire Code of the Philippines.

City Fire Marshall Arnulfo Sayson said that the number is expected to grow as their inspectors continue to inspect establishments in the city's outskirt barangays after concluding the same in the poblacion area.

Sayson said that most of the violations were on defective fire extinguishers and the absence of fire exits that he said were very important in case of emergencies.

He said that establishments found violating the fire code would have a hard time getting their business permits and he advised them to immediately correct the defects so that they can start processing their papers.

Sayson, who assumed his post on December 2 last year, started the full implementation of the fire code exposing many establishment that have defective fire exits such as Why Not Music Box.

In the case of Why Not, he said, the owner destroyed vertical structures to open a fire exit.

Another establishment found violating the fire code is Ang Boulevard Karaoke Bar, owned by a brother of Councilor George Sy, but he said management is now clearing the passage to the fire exit to comply with the law.

Meanwhile, Sayson said Mayor Agustin Perdices is backing his department's request to buy a power saw, a bolt cutter, gas masks, and five hand held radios.

Moreover, he said that the city government is buying 20 hose units costing about P140,000 to augment the old ones bought five years ago. Joe A. Medinilla
