NBI eyes major drive vs pirated VCDs anew

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) district office in Dumaguete City warned of another major drive expected to haul in at least a million pesos worth of video cassette discs (VCDs) early next month.

NBI-Dumaguete Special Agent Miguel Cadungog bared this following separate raids the agency conducted on the first day of its campaign in three sites in Dumaguete City Friday last week that yielded about 5,000 video discs worth P300,000.

The raided establishments were those at the city's barter trade center, Times Mercantile, and the Fair Trade Centre at Quezon Park.

Cadungog said the NBI is working out a major operation for February hoping to seize millions of pesos worth of discs to show to the public that the agency means business.

The confiscated discs will be destroyed by a road roller as the NBI did last year in front of city hall with more than a million pesos worth of pirated VCDs.

In the meantime, Cadungog said that they are waiting orders from the VRB and from the higher office for the filing of charges against the vendors found selling the pirated VCD in the city.

The NBI Special Agent said that last week's raid was consonant with the order from the Videogram Regulatory Board headed by actor Ramon "Bong" Revilla.

The raid was a joint effort of the local NBI and the city police station with the blessing of the city government to stamp out the rampant selling of pirated tapes and discs on sidewalks and other business establishments. Joe A. Medinilla
