Son blames nurse for pa's death in jail cell

A CONVICT blamed the jail nurse of the Negros Oriental Detention and Rehabilitation Center (NODRC) for the death of his 72-year old father who died in the cell they both share together in NODRC last January 2.

Nober Marcelino, like his father Melquiades, is facing a life sentence for the killing of a Bacolod City resident in 1987 in the municipality of Tayasan.

Marcelino said jail nurse Haydee Agir was on leave for the Christmas celebration from December 23 to 27 but failed to report to work on January 2.

Melquiades, a native of Pindahan, Tayasan died on January 2, 2003 after almost a week of lingering illness.

"Ang ako lang nga dili na masubli pa ang panghitabo gumikan sa pagpasagad sa usa ka kawani sa gobierno," Marcelino said.

The elder Marcelino fell sick before Christmas and admitted to Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital on the evening of December 26.

The younger convict said his father was unable to take medicine because they had no money to buy the prescription and that their only hope was for the nurse to sign the prescription receipt so he could avail of free government medicine.

"Ang paglaum sa mga pinereso nga makatumar og tambal gikan sa gobierno," Marcelino said. "Pero dili mi makakuha kay wala ang nurse nga maoy mopirma sa resita."

Jail staff echoed Marcelino's sentiments.

"Siya ra man gud ang authorized jail personnel nga makapirma sa resita sa tambal nga kuhaon sa Botica Real," one of the jail personnel explained.

Based on jail records Agir filed her leave of absence from December 23 to December 27.

Provincial Guard 2 Evelyn Pilas said the nurse was expected to report on January 2 because of the intervening weekend and holidays but that Agir called up to say she was sick and could not report for work on January 2.

The 72-year old convict died midnight on January 2, 2003 after taking medicine bought with the help of provincial jail warden Atty. Jeffrey Araula and was buried at Bogo cemetery the next day.

The younger Marcelino said Agir should be replaced, but some jail personnel recommended that the provincial jail management would assign her assistant to entertain sickly prisoner or authorize the jail guard on duty to sign medicine prescription forms to help the sick.

The provincial jail has a total of 309 inmates including seven women. Victor L. Camion
