Group joins protest v. US attack on Iraq

THE Peace Resource Center of Silliman University has joined other groups in the country and worldwide in opposing the planned United States-led war against Iraq.

In press statement, SU PRC described the worldwide opposition to war as growing at a "rapid pace in recent months as more and more people became convinced that the pending war is nothing but an excuse for the US to expand its military and economic interests".

"The cry, no blood for oil, can now be heard throughout the world," the statement said.

The PRC added that a massive protest will come at the end of the week to coincide with US President George Bush's ultimatum to Saddam Hussein to comply with the American pressure this week "or else."

It lamented that Bush's threats ignored the international cries to give UN inspectors more time to inspect Iraq's military installations.

"France, Germany, and now Russia are scrambling to draft a counter resolution which will avoid military intervention in Iraq and increase the presence of UN inspectors," it said.

Recent US polls by the Washington Post, showed that 60 percent of US citizens believed UN inspectors should be given more time, the peace resources center said.

As a move to oppose, the PRC sponsored a protest rally dubbed as "Tigum-tigum Alang sa Kalinaw" held at the Silliman University lawn in front Hibbard Hall Friday.

It featured a candlelight prayer vigil with music and speakers supporting the international "world against war" protest in over 30 major cities across the globe, including Manila. VLC
