VM league asks Arroyo to scrap PPA

THE Vice Mayors' League (VML) in Negros Oriental asked President Arroyo to scrap the controversial Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA) to lower down electricity rate charges.

In their recent meeting at the Dumaguete Session Hall, the Vice-Mayors led by Dumaguete City Vice Mayor William Ablong passed a unanimous resolution that will add to the protest against the controversial rate charge.

"The imposition of PPA constitutes as much as 60 percent of the monthly electrical bill and continues to exact a heavy burden on the consumers of the Negros Oriental electric cooperatives, now made more heavier with the steep increase of petroleum products and resultant increase of prices of just about anything," the VM league resolution said.

The league statement warned that the "perilous combination" of imposing PPA that results in the high cost of electricity and the rising cost of petroleum products could "wreak havoc" on the already "frail condition" of the people as well as the economy's health.

"The people need some respite and the VLMP is of the view that more than ever it is the right time to scrap the PPA," the resolution further said.
