Club 64 Inc. wins chess tourney
By Rene R. Genove

Tanjay chess ace Edison Violeta captured the 20 man-field February Active Chess 6-round Swiss System tournament recently with a total 5 points score at the Club 64 Inc. playing hall, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City.

It was a come-from-behind finish for Violeta handling the Black pieces as he salvaged a win in the 90th move using a rarely used line in tournament plays, an English Opening variation against Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC) ace Wilmier Barron.

A three way tie for second place with 4 points each are Roque Bonganciso, Wilmier Barron and Evan Tampi as they struggled for a win in the last two rounds of play as they were pitted against each other in the ensuing rounds.

Early leader Barron bowed to Bonganciso employing a Queen's Gambit game in 50 moves, while Tampi demolished Kenneth Pinili in a Center Counter game via a Caro-khan Defense transposition in 60 moves.

In another game, the 14 & Under February Active Chess Category, Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) bound wood pusher Nestor Trumata's 4 points was enough to grabbed the championship crown as he edged second placer Noel Solon 3.5-points after 6-rounds of Swiss System tournament.

As told by Chess Tournament Arbiter Flor Zamora, a "Special Cash Gift" was awarded to Noel Solon during the final round of the February Active Chess tournament when he beat veteran campaigner Clint Barron in 20 moves using the Pirc Defense in less than 20 minutes of play. One striking advantage of the defense (Pirc Defense) is that Black can adjust his center policy to whatever method of development White chooses.

Meanwhile, In another chess tournament, the Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Tournament was formally opened by Negros Oriental Governor George Arnaiz and former National Master Rosendo Bandal, president of the Chess Master Center last Sunday at the Bethel Guest House, Dumaguete City.

In Governor Arnaiz speech, he commended the Chess Master Center in chess promotion. He further stressed that because of the numerous activities and active involvement of the chess club in the province sports development program, the Provincial Government increased its budget for financial aid to chess organizations.

The Chess Master Center is the only chess organization in the province recognized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the governing chess body in the country.

The games will be played every Sunday only at 1:30 p.m. at the Bethel Guest House, Dumaguete City.
