BFP hits back at DCWD over water supply during fires
By Victor L. Camion

THE Bureau of Fire Protection hit back at the Dumaguete City Water District for allegedly criticizing the fire bureau for its alleged inefficiency in responding to fires.

Provincial Fire Marshal C/Insp. Victor Vibares instead urged DCWD to improve the water pressure of its fire hydrants to make them useful in case of fires.

"Mag-unsa man ang fire-hydrant kon hinay ang tubig," Vibares said in a recent forum by the Philippine Information Agency last week.

During the forum, Florentino Umbac, a reactor, observed that instead of using water hydrants firemen get their water from the DCWD station near the bell tower along Perdices Street.

Umbac said that during the fire that gobbled Uymatiao late last year, the fire station used the water from the DCWD station near the Bell Tower when there was a water hydrant near the fire scene.

DCWD general manager Espirato Dicen, in a separate interview, said the fire-hydrant is abundant with water, although admitting that it is not for directly putting out fire.

"Ang purpose sa fire-hydrant nga makasupply og tubig ngadto sa truck nga dili na kinahanglan pang moadto sa tanke ang mga bombero, dili aron maoy ipatay direkta-mente sa kalayo," Dicen said.

"Magtukod na lang mi'g fire station,"he added.

Dicen said the fire bureau should take over the responsibility to maintain fire-hydrants to ensure the smooth supply of water.
