BFP warns v. unsafe boardinghouses
By Victor L. Camion

THE local office of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Dumaguete City warned owners of unsafe boarding houses that they would not be issued permits unless they complied with the provisions of the Fire Safety Code of the Philippines.

Chief Insp. Arnulfo Sayson, city fire marshal, said 51 of the 111 boarding houses registered as operating in the city are operating illegally.

Sayson said his office would not issue clearances for business permit applications unless the owners will correct the deficiencies noted by fire inspectors.

The boarding houses, he said, have no fire exits and fire alarms and boarders are vulnerable to any danger that may arise resulting from the uncorrected deficiencies.

Engineer Evaresto Crispo of the City Engineer's Office echoed Sayson's statement, saying one building of a private school in the city was demolished for violating the safety code.

He identified the school as Chunghua High School.

Sayson said one boardinghouse along Sta. Catalina Street was closed down a few years back for the same violations.

However, he said, he has not yet recommended the closure of any of the 51 violators and that he could not order the same because that power belongs to the regional fire marshal.

Mayor Agustin Perdices also has authority to order the closure of boarding houses lacking the permit to operate.
