BSP to help OFWs affected by US-Iraq war
By Victor L. Camion

THE Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in Dumaguete City will help overseas Filipino workers from Negros Oriental who will be affected by the on going US-led war in Iraq.

Dumaguete Branch Manager II Paulita Enrile said BSP has added banknotes from Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Israel in its list of acceptable foreign currencies for conversion to pesos to help OFWs returning from the war torn areas in Iraq and its neighboring countries.

BSP Dumaguete City Branch is one among the 19 BSP regional offices and branches nationwide authorized to exchange the foreign currencies.

Each OFW is allowed to exchange up to P10,000 worth of Kawaiti Dinar, Iraqi Dinar, Israeli Shekel and Turkish Lira.

To qualify, the OFW has to present his or her passport or ID from the employer or company where he/she was employed, travel documents, employment contract or certificate of employment and compensation, proof of source of income like pay slip bearing the signature of an employer or company official, personal data of the OFW containing information like name, address, employer or company and personal data of beneficiaries and related information.

Enrile said the program is part of the special service program of the national government for OFWs who would be affected by the Iraq crises through its currency exchange assistance.

The BSP is also allowed to open the exchange program in its airport banks at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, NAIA terminal II and Cebu International Airport.

Other authorized BSP regional offices and branches are Angeles, Bacolod, Batac, Cabanatuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Cotabato, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, Kalibo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena, Naga, Tacloban, Tuguerao and Zambaonga.
