DCWD to tighten expenses, avoid eyed rate hike

THE Dumaguete City Water District (DCWD) will tighten its belt to avoid any rate increase this year.

DCWD general manager Esperato Dicen said that as long as the water district still have funds to finance the construction of additional pumping stations and other facilities, the agency will not impose any rate increase on its consumers.

Dicen said almost all water consumers are suffering from the economic slump and that the agency's collection capability is still stable.

"Sa pagkakaron, stable pa hinuon ang collection mao nga makaya pa," Dicen said.

He stressed however that if the agency failed to answer the water supply needs of the growing number of water consumers, the district would be forced to impose a rate increase.

Dicen said the DCWD maintains an average 1,200 additional consumers a year, which means, he said that the district needs an additional pumping station a year to meet their needs.

He said DCWD plans to build five pumping station in the next five years starting this year.

"Dili ko buot nga mahibalik sa kanhing sitwasyon ang Dumaguete nga nag-antos sa hilabihang kahinay nga supply sa tubig," the DCWD general manager said.

A pumping station costs from P6 million to P7 million pesos to build. This includes the costs of mainline tubes for the reservoirs.

DCWD maintains two big reservoirs in Barangays Talay and Candau-ay and eight pumping stations supplying water to more than 18,000 consumers in Dumaguete City and nearby towns.

"Kada tuig nagsaka ang ihap sa mga konsumedor," he said adding, "nagsaka usab ang panginahanglang tubig."
