84% of villages in NegOr energized By Victor L. Camion
GOVERNOR George Arnaiz of Negros Oriental lauded the Philippine National Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) as the biggest contributor to the progress of the province.
Governor Arnaiz was speaking during the recent 24th Annual PNOC-EDC Geothermal Conference at Hotel InterContinental in Makati last month.
The figure represents 468 out of the total of 557 barangays in Negros Oriental.
"Twenty years ago, when the geothermal project was still at its incipient phase, nobody in Negros Oriental ever thought that, one day, our mountainous and remotest barangays could be supplied with that precious power called electricity. Electricity that can be used to run machines, create employment opportunities and promote the health and well-being of our people," said Arnaiz in his keynote speech.
He also said that the development brought by PNOC has brought untold changes in the people's lifestyle in a province that is largely agricultural and helped educate residents in the hinterland villages of the province through television.
"Pag bumaba sa bayan, marunong nang maghanap nga pizza o ng hamburger," the governor said.
Arnaiz cited a mother in a remote barangay whose baby used a modern diaper promoted through television that had became available in the hinterlands because of electricity.
"Sabi ko sa loob ko, this is how TV advertising works-a creation brought about by making electricity available to these people," the governor said.
The governor added that as the seat of geothermal power in Western and Central Visayas, Negros Oriental "stands proud and tall as the first and the primary exporter of power across the sea to Panay Island and nearby Cebu Province".
Southern Negros Geothermal Production field which has a combined power capacity of 192.5 megawatts, shares 64 percent of this power to the entire Island of Negros during peak hours, 23 percent to Panay Island and 13 percent to Cebu Province," he said.
