Guv hits aggie, R&D budget cut
By Jimmy P. Abayon

GOVERNOR George Arnaiz blamed budget cuts in the agricultural and other sectors of government for the research and development status in the country today.

Governor Arnaiz spoke before representatives of member agencies of the Central Visayas Consortium for Integrated Regional Research and Development (CV-CIRRD) that marked its 16th anniversary at the audio-visual room of CV-CIRRD base agency Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC) Thursday and Friday.

In his anniversary message, the governor underscored the role that research and technology play in enhancing the welfare of farmers and improving food productivity.

But, he lamented that because of the 60 percent cut in the budget for agricultural research, farmers are forced to settle for short-term improvements to improve their lives.

Arnaiz described local government units as the "saving grace" by providing help to further the development of the agricultural sector.

The governor cited the Provincial Government's Barangay Agriculture Development Centers (BAD-Cs) that make it possible for farming communities to improve and develop their food production efforts through "doable but practical" farming approaches.

Revolving on the theme "Sustaining Farmers' Productivity through Research and Technology", CV-CIRRD selected three winning entries on different researches by its member agencies.

The first prize went to Dr. Rachel Cadelina for her research titled: Evaluation of DA-RFU 7 Produced New Cattle Disease (NCD) Antigen Through Hemagglutination-Inhibition and Challenge Test.

Second prize went to Efrida Castillon of Department of Agriculture-7 for her "Study on the Relationship Between Crop Age, Variety and White Stemborer Damage on Rice" while the third prize went to Sister Julita Ruelo of University of San Carlos for her Meloidogyne Studies.

The second day of the celebration dubbed "Farmers' Day" featured a brief program with 3rd District Rep. Herminio Teves as guest speaker.
