Peace corps volunteer introduces solar dryer
BAIS CITY -- The City Government of Bais launched the Sanitary Solar Dryer, a technology introduced locally by peace corps volunteer Philip Livingstone, to make the drying of fish, meat, vegetables and grains faster and dust-and-disease-free.
Mayor Hector Villanueva welcomed the new technology as good news to the people of Bais City since 13 of its 35 villages are along the coast and their residents depend on fishing and seaweed culture for livelihood.
The dryer uses a hinged top that aids in drying sanitarily at the same helping increase the drying temperature.
The technology harnesses the sun's energy to dry three kilos of boneless "danggit" in two hours and inch-thick tuna meat in four hours at an average temperature of 87 degrees Celsius on a clear day.
The equipment costs some P1,000 and can be easily manufactured from local materials.
It features a transparent cover to keep heat inside and protect the content from flies and bacteria.
Mayor Villanueva said the city would provide each coastal village with a unit to help in whatever food drying preparation the residents might wish to do. PIO/PR
