WCES marks 'Buwan ng Wika'

THE West City Elementary School in Dumaguete City will celebrate "Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa" this month.

Glenda Duran, grade level chairman on Pilipino committee, WCES grade IV teacher, said this year's celebration will focus on strengthening the use of Pilipino as a national language for pupils and students to remind the people to adopt the local language and the vernacular.

WCES Pilipino Overall Chairwoman Juliet Pinero said that the lined-up activities for the celebration were prepared by the national office of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Manila.

This year's celebration has the theme "Wikang Pilipino Pagyamanin; Wikang Vernacular Huwag Limutin; Wikang Ingles Pagbutihin".

Pinero said the purpose is not only to promote Pilipino languages but also to strengthen expertise on the English language.

The activities for the month include a media forum for an efficient writing of article and news writing in school campuses and universities.

From August 18 to 24, WCES will hold a tri-media forum and radio and television tour and an editorial writing contest on "Buwan ng Wika"

Other lined-up activities starting August 15 to 29 are spelling contest for grades 1 to 3, Original Pilipino Music Minus One singing contest for grades 1 to 4, Slogan Writing contest for grades 3 to 5, folk dance contest for grade 5 and 6, editorial writing contest regarding the celebration for grades 5 and 6, Essay Writing contest for grade 6, poem contest for grade 1 to 2 and exhibit of Filipino dishes and Filipino made products at the WCES mini park to be followed by the culmination program at around 3 p.m. on August 29.
