4 more typhoons to hit the Visayas
By Adrian Sedillo

FOUR to five more typhoons are expected to hit the Visayas from October to December this year, said director Angel Gaviola of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) during his recent visit to Dumaguete City.

Gaviola was here for a two-day meeting of disaster coordinating councils in the province at Opena's restaurant last week.

He said residents, particularly those living near riverbanks, must be given advance information about the threat from the coming storms to avoid losing lives and properties.

Gaviola, also executive director of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said President Arroyo has been urging the NDCC to ensure zero casualties during calamities by strengthening its disaster preparedness program nationwide.

In the same meeting, Provincial Board (PB) Member Arturo Umbac said riverbank residents should not wait for advise from the weather bureau before transferring to safer places to avoid incidents like the Sta. Catalina flashflood that left nine people dead, including two children, and one missing.

Umbac said he fill file a measure before the PB to hasten response during calamities, especially the distribution of relief goods and other services to the victims.

The board member, who was among the first provincial official to respond to the Sta. Catalina calamity, said he was dismayed by government's delayed response in the distribution of relief goods to the victims compared to private donors and agencies.
