Students hit teacher, principal for abuse

THREE female students of Negros Oriental High School (NOHS) sought help from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) here against one of their teachers and their school principal.

Zeneth Gako, 15, accused her Jessie Gabas and school principal Luz Bunol of slander and physical injury in relation to child abuse.

In her two-page sworn statement to CHR Special Investigator Jesus Canete, Gako said Gabas harangued her and two other classmates Neslyn Alam-alam and Lordele Abdula in "slanderous language" in front of many students and teachers inside the school campus last August 9.

This was after the teacher caught Abdula and Gako fixing their hair while looking at the right and left side mirror of an SUV.

Gako admitted slightly turning the side mirror for a better view. She was shouting invectives at us and then shouted.

She added Gabas then threw a stone at her, hitting her left foot. The student further said she had wanted to apologize at that time.

"I was about to apologize to her for I felt sorry for what we did but then Mrs. Gabas came upon me in rage and, using both hands, struck me forcefully hitting my breast and left shoulder arm at the same time causing me to stagger backwards," she narrated.

Alam-alam and Abdula in a joint sworn statement corroborated Gako's.

She said she showed her reddened shoulder arm to school nurse Marites Curativo at the school clinic but that she refused to treat her saying "it was nothing" and allegedly warned her against reporting the incident to her parents because "it was her fault."

Gako said school principal Bunol only laughed when she was informed of the incident, saying it was normal for the student to be hit for her fault.

"Mrs. Bunol also told me that it was normal for me to be struck and slapped because it was my fault, since the minor costs P5,000 and that the said vehicle is an original surplus," Gako said. VLC
