Genove: Stallions edge Tanjay City, 83-82 By Rene R. Genove Isport Lang
TANJAY City, blowing a 15-point lead early in the fourth period, suffered their first loss to Silliman University Stallions, 83-82 in the elimination round of the Dumaguete City Basketball Fiesta Tournament held recently at the Lamberto Macias Sports Center, Capitol Area, Dumaguete City.
The stallions engineered a comeback from 15 points down, 50-65, at the start of the fourth period, relying only on teamwork, aggressive hustling, and tightening their defense to demolish Tanjay's running game.
Stallion's point forward Franco Salvino, center Jordan Alano and Hori Lazalita came to the rescue as they regained their touch down the stretch to grab the lead at 82-81 with 21 seconds left.
Tanjay's Max Maitim's daredevil drive (fouled by Stallion's Lazalita) split his free throws that tied the game at 82-all.
After Tanjay's successive misses, with only 13.7 seconds left, Stallion's center forward Alano was fouled, and put the cap on the basket, and as the seconds ticked off the clock, converted only a point to win the game, 83-82 final score.
Other results: Agencia Belen/Misubishi ripped Bais City, 102-96; Tanjay City downed Sibulan, 100-96; Bayawan City stomped Agencia Belen/Mitsubishi, 101-80; Sibulan trounced Dgte South Pacific, 91-85; Agencia Belen/Mitsubishi edged Bais City, 102-96; Agencia Belen/Mitsubishi subdued Colonext, 87-84.
Meanwhile, at the opening ceremonies held at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center, Vice-Mayor William Ablong spoke about the importance of sports as a moving force to good health both physical and mental.
He further stressed, "In every game there are winners and losers but what matters most is not winning or losing at all but how you play the game."
The sports minded 2nd District Congressman Emilio "Dodo" Macias talked about "basketball as a training ground to become a good citizen through teamwork, it promotes good health, and will inculcate good values to everyone specially honesty."
He also urged the players "to play according to the dictum of the rules of sportsmanship".
In the opening games, Colonext was penalized for a one game suspension for not attending the opening ceremony. However, they were allowed to play against Bais City for spectators who paid to watch the scheduled games.
Tanjay City beat Sibulan, 100-96 in the opening games of the Dumaguete Fiesta Open Basketball Invitational Tournament and posted an early lead in Bracket B, Oct. 25, at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex, Capitol Area, this city.
Bayawan City's five gored Agencia Belen/Mitsubishi squad, 101-80 after a series of offensive maneuvers, maintaining control of the game early in the second half.
Meanwhile, in another scheduled game Sunday, Sibulan downed Dumaguete South Pacific, 91-85.
All games will be played at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center (LMSCC) from October 25 until November 30. All playing dates will be posted at the Sports and Youth Development Office and or at the LMSCC bulletin board.
The City Sports and Games Officer and Tournament Director Joe A. Guirit invites the public to witness the basketball games by teams composed of local talents and other players from Cebu City and Bacolod City.
The ten teams that will see action during the month long tourney are: Bracket A: Central Visayas Polytechnic College Tigers, Bais City, Agencia Belen/Mitsubishi, Bayawan City, and Colonext. Bracket B: Tanjay City, Silliman University Stallions, Dumaguete South Pacific, Sibulan, and Foundation University Greyhounds.
