Boycott 'Sex Scandal' - Council
By Adrian Sedillo

CITY Hall appealed to the public to boycott the showing of "Sex Scandal", a film based on the controversial Dumaguete and Cebu sex scandal, scheduled for premiere viewing in Metro Manila this November 19.

The appeal is contained in a resolution the Dumaguete City Council passed during its regular session Thursday and appended in a fiery privilege speech Vice Mayor William Ablong delivered before the city legislature.

The resolution also requested movie house operators in the city not to show and patronize the sex scandal movie that he described as directed, produced, and promoted by "evil men".

"What evil men (the director, producers, and promoters), unmindful and uncaring of the shame and anguish suffered by the women involved, making love at a place they believed had privacy but were instead videotaped by equally evil men -- all for personal gain," the resolution read.

"It is produced, sold, and distributed by unscrupulous men and women purely for monetary gain, in utter disregard for the common good. It is purchased because of a selfish obsession with sex and instant gratification," the resolution further said.

The measure called on the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTCRB) to recall the film.

It said motion pictures and television have to be shielded from "those who would prostitute" their functions in society, violate laws, public morals and good customs, and corrupt the minds of the young.

The City Council will send a copy of the resolution to President Arroyo to tell her about the sentiments of the people of Dumaguete City and request her to intercede for the recall of the film.

It will also give copies of the measure to the three congressmen of Negros Oriental for their support and intercession.

Vice Mayor Ablong's outrage surfaced in reaction to a Bandera tabloid report Wednesday that the movie "Sex Scandal" will be shown on November 19.

The tabloid further quoted film director Francis Posadas as saying the MTRCB approved the movie without cuts and that it was his boldest film because of its "super" sex scenes.

The male leads of the movie are Allen Dizon, JP Obligacion, and Gerald Lauron. The sexy stars are Danna Garcel and Anne Borromeo. The movie is produced by Sacramento Films and released through Angora Films.

"These are some of the producers of our movie industry who prefer easy and quick ways to make profits at the expense of the innocent young victims," Ablong said in his privilege speech.

The vice mayor called on the community and local women's groups to rage against the plight of the three women victims and to close ranks against the violation of the rights of women.

He also called on Mayor Agustin Perdices to charge the producers of the film.

Ablong commended the Negros Oriental Network of NGOs and POs (NegOrNet) for issuing a statement condemning the perpetrators of the Dumaguete sex scandal.

Msgr. Merlin T. Logronio of the Diocese of Dumaguete chairs NegOrNet, a group composed of 15 non-government and 12 people's organizations.
