GOV. George Arnaiz formed a committee to investigate last Thursday's dawn escape of two prisoners from the provincial jail.

Provincial Attorney Erwin Vergara heads the committee.

Governor Arnaiz said he received Tuesday the report on the escape of Joel Amaro, Jr. and Neil Carino and the explanations of jail guard PJO1 Bonifat Torres from provincial jail warden Jeffrey Araula.

Arnaiz said the committee would decide what punishment is due the jail guard for his "carelessness".

Amaro Jr., 33, married, of Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, is facing multiple homicide and highway robbery charges in connection with the May, 2002 Bayawan City heist that left four Sta. Catalina employees and a hitch-rider dead.

Carino, 33, single, from Butuan City, is facing a robbery with murder case.

Amaro's brother, Julo, a former member of the RPA-ABB and one of those implicated in the bloody Bayawan City payroll-slay incident, eluded arrest and is now with the New People's Army operating in southern Negros along with chief suspect Raul Villar.

SJO1 Renato Alcorcon, officer of the day at the time of the escape said the two prisoners were kept on isolation in Cell A-1.

Alcorcon said around 2 to 4 a.m. Thursday, the two men bore a hole on the ceiling using a wooden plank, climbed up, and snipped the zinc roof with a pair of scissors.

Both then climbed the jail's watchtower and lowered themselves down using a blanket.

He said Torres had left his post to get coffee and on return failed to notice the hole on Cell A-1's rooftop.

Alcorcon said the guard learned of the escape only after discovering the blanket hanging from the tower.

Gov. Arnaiz believes the two men joined the New People's Army that earlier absorbed RPA-ABB renegades Raul Villar a.k.a. "Ka Drilon" and Julo Amaro who perpetrated the bloody May 2002 Bayawan City heist.
