2 RPA-ABB men slain in NPA attack
By Maricar Aranas and Hermie B. Tresquio

GUIHULNGAN, Negros Oriental -- About 25 heavily armed men believed to be New People's Army (NPA) rebels gunned down two members of the breakaway communist faction in an ambush Tuesday morning in Sitio Istaka, Humay-humay village.

A military report identified the slain members of the Revolutionary Proletariat Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) as Roberto Bukag and Levie Buenaflor who were aboard a motorcycle when the ambush occurred 10:30 Tuesday morning.

Capt. Galiver Cineres of the 303rd Brigade of the Philippine Army stationed in Guihulngan said the heavily armed attackers were wearing camouflage uniform and are believed to be NPA rebels.

Capt. Cineres believed the rebels might have been planning to ambush the cargo truck of the 542nd Engineering Battalion that is presently constructing a road in Bulado village near the scene of the ambush.

Following the attack, the military command temporarily pulled out its engineering brigade from the project site.

He said the 11th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army was conducting hot pursuit operation against the NPA ambush party.

As this developed, provincial police director S/Supt. Amaron Morrok ordered all chiefs of police to be on alert as a result of the most recent attack.

Meanwhile in Basay, southern Negros Oriental, armed men claiming to be members of the NPA gunned down a 59-year old former village chief early Tuesday evening in Malatubahan village.

Gregorio Rabina, 59, married, died on the spot from gunshots on his head and back.

Police investigators said Rabina was on board a motorcycle on his way to the house of a candidate for municipal councilor when the still unidentified men fired at him several times.

Investigators recovered five empty shells from caliber .45 and caliber .38 pistols.

The victim's family said Rabina had been receiving numerous death threats in the past.

Police found an envelope containing a letter that said the victim had been warned of his activities and that the attackers were members of the NPA.
