Church confident two-child plan will not push through
By Rachel M. Nessia

THE Roman Catholic Church in Negros Oriental is confident the proposed two-child policy will not be implemented in the country.

"Are they really serious? It will never work. It is beyond imagination," said Msgr. Merlin Logronio of the Bacong Parish.

Speaking on Wednesday's regular PIA forum, Logronio said the proposal will not pass first reading.

He said the church ignores the proposal, he said, is the wrong solution to a problem and "in fact create more problems."

Logronio downplayed reports of global and national overpopulation as well as poverty, describing them as "artificial alarms" spread to promote the need to control population.

He stressed that global studies have proven there is no overpopulation in the country and in the world.

The Philippine population is 84 million.

On the other hand, in the same forum, Engr. Trelly Marigza, president of Negros Oriental Family Planning Reproductive Health Advocacy Network, disagrees with perceptions that countries with 2 percent population growth are "on the brink of disaster".

Marigza said the fast population growth should be taken into account.

The country's population, she said could reach 168 million about thirty years from now.

"Will our present resources be enough to cater to the needs of the populace?" Marigza asked.
