Perez: Arts and Sciences Week at Norsu

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Negros Oriental State University (Norsu) holds a three-day CAS Week celebration on September 20-22 with the theme, "The Role and Commitment of the College of Arts and Sciences in the Philippine Agenda for Science and Technology".

Monday, September 20 activities include the following: thanksgiving mass with Rev. Fr. Enrique Balungag, celebrant at 9:00 in the morning, Norsu gymnasium; open house (classrooms, laboratories, faculty and department offices) at 1:00 p.m.; ball games, at the gym; mathematics research presentations, whole afternoon, CCE rooms; and technical rehearsals for Mr. & Ms. CAS 2004, 6:30 p.m., at the gym.

Tuesday, September 21, the activities are: general convocation with Ched Commissioner Dr. Rolando Dizon as guest speaker, 9:00 a.m., gym; potluck party (fellowship lunch with faculty, students and administration), noon, gym; Science Quiz Bowl (elementary and secondary), 2:00 p.m, gym; and Mr. & Ms CAS Pageant, 7:00 p.m., gym.

Wednesday, September 22, two major activities at the gym are ballgames, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and kinetics, 7:00 p.m.

September is observed as Science Month among schools nationwide.

On August 26, 2004, the faculty of Physic and Geology Department of CAS launched the joint Science Teaching Enhancement Program (Steep) of Norsu and the Department of Education in Dumaguete City.

Steep is a 12-Saturday extension program for the faculty of Magsaysay Memorial Elementary School as well as some school heads and science teachers of DepEd, Division of Dumaguete City.

Dr. Ludivina Tingas, DepEd science coordinator introduced some 30 participating school heads and science teachers. Norsu CAS dean Dr. Violeta Taring introduced the 15 cooperating teachers of the program led by Engr. Eduardo Iso, chairman, physics and geology department.

Dr. Carmelita Dulangan, assistant schools division superintendent of Dumaguete City and Dr. Henry A. Sojor, Norsu president delivered messages of cooperation.
