Child killed, 14 hurt in road accident
By Hermie B. Tresquio

ZAMBOANGUITA, Negros Oriental -- A five-year-old boy died and 14 others were hurt when the Fuso Canter cargo truck they were riding crashed onto a Gmelina tree on the side of Juan Colon bridge in Sitio Salngan, Barangay Mayabon Friday afternoon.

A belated police report identified the boy, as Junrel Futalan of Salngan.

He died on the way to hospital in Dumaguete City.

The hurt passengers were truck driver Nobelito Rabanes, 22, married, Danny Boy Grepo, Nejeo Mitre, Merlyn Juanilio, Rodulfo Grepo, Robinson Iwayan, Merlyn Mitre, Jose Grepo, Beverly Mitre, Federica Espina, Antonio Juanilio, Roderica Grepo, and Cresilda Acabal all of Calatrava in Negros Occidental.

Rabanes said the vehicle was on its way to Dumaguete City from Bayawan City when on reaching Salngan, the five-year old boy suddenly crossed the road and was hit by the truck.

The driver said he stopped the truck and helped the victim and his mother, Rosalie, get in to transport them to hospital.

On the way, Rebanes said, the boy's mother kept on nagging and in confusion he lost control of the vehicle and crashed onto a Gemelina tree.

A passing L-300 van for hire on the way from Bayawan City fortunately passed by and stopped and brought the boy and his mother to Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City.

The boy succumbed to injuries minutes after he arrived in hospital despite attempts by doctors to save him.
