Mayor orders intensified anti-dengue drive

VALENCIA, Negros Oriental -- Mayor Rodolfo Gonzales Jr. ordered all barangay officials in the municipality to conduct and sustain clean-up activities to ensure their villages are free of breeding sites of dengue carrying mosquitoes.

Mayor Gonzales issued the order following rising dengue cases in his municipality.

The municipal rural health office in Valencia reported ten cases of dengue for the month of August.

Health officers believe the number could be higher because of the possibility that some cases had not been reported.

Mayor Gonzales said barangay officials are responsible to protect their people.

"It is not good to know that our barangays here will become a haven for dengue mosquito yet we have been promoting ourselves as the cleanest and greenest municipality of the province," the mayor said.

Meantime, the health office appealed to the public to report dengue cases in their barangays so efforts could be made to stop the spread of the disease.
