Arroyo eyes Negros as energy source By Syril Repe
AMLAN, Negros Oriental -- President Arroyo eyed the two provinces of Negros as alternative sources of energy aside from the existing geothermal plant in Valencia, Negros Oriental.
Arroyo was in Negros Oriental Wednesday from a visit to Iligan City enroute to Cebu as part of her trip to monitor her Strong Republic Nautical Highway.
She arrived on board a government helicopter around 3 p.m. at the Amlan Elementary School where provincial and local officials led by Governor George Arnaiz, Bais City Mayor Hector Villanueva, and Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices met her.
From there, the President and her entourage along with local officials and members of the national and local media boarded LTC Martin, a privately owned roll on roll off vessel at Tampi on the way to Bato, Samboan, Cebu.
On the trip, Arroyo explained the thrust of her administration on energy matters, among others.
Energy Secretary Vince Perez said Negros Island has the capacity and potential to produce alternative energy sources to accelerate power production.
Perez the government will pursue the establishment of Palinpinon Plant 2 (PAL2) to address the worsening power shortage.
Arroyo and Secretary Perez stressed that potential plans include the harnessing of hydropower and the use of ethanol, a chemical from sugar cane.
In the same media briefing, the President said her administration will strengthen the link among the islands of Negros, the Visayas, and Mindanao through the nautical highway and open their doors to commerce.
