Chinese group plans to buy coconut husks By Adrian Sedillo
A GROUP of Chinese businessmen is interested to buy coconut husks from Negros Oriental, said provincial coconut manager Brendan Trasmonte.
Trasmonte identified the firm as China Shenyang Xudong Furniture Co. Ltd.
He said the group will provide decorticating machine to process the husks.
The machine will be installed in two strategic sites in the province, one in Bacong and the other in Vallehermoso.
Trasmonte said that based on reports, China needs 2.3 million metric tons of coconut husk a year to feed its industry.
On the other hand, the Philippines, he said, produced only some 300,000 metric tons of the raw material.
He also said the demand for coconut husk is high in China because of its use for erosion control, the manufacture of geo textile furniture, and the country's anti-desertification program.
China uses the coconut byproduct to ward off desert encroaching into agricultural lands.
