Guv eyes Mantalip reef as new tourist spot By Adrian Sedillo
GOV. George Arnaiz is eyeing Mantalip reef off the coast of Ayungon and Bindoy as a potential tourism attraction for domestic and foreign scuba divers.
Speaking after a visit to the site recently, Governor Arnaiz of Negros Oriental said he was surprised at the natural beauty of the 649-hectare reef which, if developed, he said, can turn out more attractive than the coral reef of Apo island in Dauin.
The governor lamented that some portions of the site were damaged by dynamite fishing.
Arnaiz personally saw the destroyed underwater site when he went scuba diving in the area.
Moreover, he said, he saw only a few fish inhabiting the reefs, most of which were evasive.
Arnaiz urged Mayor Valente Yap of Bindoy and Mayor Edsel Enardecido of Ayungon to conserve the resource by declaring it a marine reserve.
Aside from its tourism potential, Mantalip reef will boost the two municipality's economy because the marine reserve will increase fish population, he added.
