Human rights commission to probe Polo 'illegal' detention

THE provincial office of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has started gathering and verifying reports of the alleged illegal detention of 40 farmer-beneficiaries of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program at the controversial Polo Plantation in Tanjay City.

CHR special investigator Jesus Cañete disclosed this saying Director Alejandro Alonso had directed him to look into the matter.

Praxedes Ocay, an official of the Negros Oriental People Empowerment and Development involved in the installation of the farmers, confirmed Cañete's statement, saying he has started contacting the alleged detained farmers to get statements.

Cañete said he would have to study the farmers' complaints, adding that CHR is concerned more on the charges of illegal detention.
