Militant group slams police's witch hunting
By Syril Repe

FORMER Bayan Muna Partylist Rep. Siegfred Deduro accused the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Oriental Negros of witch hunting.

He said that police still continue to link him, progressive groups, and individuals to the underground Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) and the National Democratic Front (NDF).

Deduro, Bayan Muna vice president for the Visayas who served in the 12th Congress, was reacting to statements by provincial police director Sen. Supt. Marciano Del Mar that linked him to the CPP-NPA and tagged him as head of the NPA's Regional Urban White Area Committee in Negros Island.

"It's a big lie aimed at conditioning the minds of the public on attacks against the legal democratic personalities by linking them to the revolutionary underground movement," he said during his visit to Oriental Negros to consult with Bayan Muna leaders.

The former partylist representative said that because of his position, he visits different areas to consult with Bayan Muna leaders on organizational matters, projects, and legislative agenda.

"Harassing me because of these legal activities is reminiscent of the dark days of martial rule," he said.

Deduro said the military should admit that the CPP/NPA "control some territories' in the country where they have an alternative government and enjoy people's support.

The former Bayan Muna congressman advised the military and the police to clean their ranks of massive corruption instead of linking individuals in the legal democratic movement to the underground front, which he said will not resolve the root causes of the country's problems.
