Farmers: Decide coco levy issue now
By Edmund Sestoso

LEADERS of coconut farmers throughout the Visayas called on the Sandiganbayan to speed up its decision on the controversial 20 percent share in San Miguel Corporation, which they said belongs to them.

The shares are presently contested by between the organized coconut farmers groups and former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, SMC chair.

The Supreme Court earlier ruled that the other 27 percent share belong to the coconut farmers because they were bought from the coconut levy funds.

The farmers signed and sent their petition to the Sandiganbayan during their recent regional gathering in Cebu City.

The participants to the Visayas All Coco Farmer Leaders' Conference came from Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor who organized the Alyansa sa Mag-uuma ug Mamumuo sa Lubi-Visayas.

In July 11, 2003, the Sandiganbayan ruled that the United Coconut Planters Bank was fueled by money from coco levy funds.

And in May 7 of last year, the Sandiganbayan again declared that 27 percent of the shares San Miguel firm belong to the government.
