Military to check rebels 'abuse'
THE military in Negros Oriental pledged to look into a report that members of a roving group of Revolutionary Proletariat Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB) have abused farmers in hinterland villages in the province.
Lieutenant Colonel Rey Guerero, commanding officer of the Army in the province, gave the assurance after Mayor Beda Cañamaque of Basay town complained that a heavily-armed 50-man RPA-ABB force operating in two of his remote barangays have frightened villagers.
The group is reportedly headed by a certain Ka Amor.
Guerrero said he would talk the matter over with the RPA-ABB leadership to "thresh things out".
The RPA-ABB has an existing peace pact with the Philippine Government signed during the incumbency of then President Joseph Estrada.
The army official said he has called on the breakaway faction to dissuade their people from carrying firearms.
"Kinausap na naming na huwag silang magdadala ng malalakas na kalibre ng baril pagnagpapatrolya sa mga kabahayan dahil natatakot ang karaniwang taong bayan,"he said. (Edmund Sestoso)
