Revolutionary-turned-rebel slain By Maricar Aranas and Neil C. Rio
WANTED man Julito Amaro alias Julo, a former Revolutionary Proletariat Army (RPA-ABB) who has crossed over to the New People's Army (NPA) following the bloody May 18 robbery-slay in Sta. Catalina, has been killed in an encounter between army soldiers and a band of rebels in Sitio Candugay, Barangay Casalaan, Siaton, Negros Oriental late Thursday afternoon.
Lieutenant Colonel Rey Guerrero, commander of the 61st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Bayawan City, said the three o'clock encounter took place when government forces acting on an intelligence report, rushed to Casalaan.
The government forces were led by Master Sargeant Jesus Quilaton.
Guerrero said Amaro died on the spot.
The army statement did not say how many soldiers and communist rebels were present and how many were wounded during the fight.
It said Amaro's brother Benito, 36, and a civilian hit in the crossfire Jose Pat, 32, of Apoloy, Siaton, are being treated at Siaton District Hospital.
The soldiers recovered a caliber .45 revolver in the scene of the fight.
Guerrero said Amaro's wife confirmed the slain man as her husband and has brought the body to their house in Candugay.
Meantime, the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Siaton confirmed the killing of Amaro.
Senior Police Officer 4 Franco Rubio said he led a response team of local police to Candugay around four o'clock in the afternoon after receiving a report of a shooting in the village.
Rubio said that at around nine o'clock that evening, Lieutenant Colonel Guerrero arrived at the Siaton PNP station to inform them about the encounter.
Amaro's brother, Jaime who was with him and wanted man Raul Villar a.k.a. Ka Drilon in the Sta. Catalina bloody heist, was arrested by a joint team from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group from the province and the region headed by Senior Inspector Joei Pacito Yape, Jr. and Chief Inspector Crisaleo Tolentino and the city police in Dumaguete City last January 5.
Also arrested with Jaime Amaro was his younger brother Joel on a charge of illegal possession of firearms.
