Letter to the Editor
By Aldrin C. Amistoso

THIS letter is regarding the recent outbreak of typhoid fever cases in Negros Oriental with most patients coming from my town, Sibulan. The number which totaled 133 cases in that area alone for one month is very alarming considering the number is but the so-called 'tip of the iceberg".

There is still a lot of cases down there that are not reported, I believe. This pretty much concerns me considering that my relatives are residing in that area and I do hope that the source of the infection should be identified immediately so that the epidemic could be controlled in a short period of time to spare those other residents in the area.

I could remember back then when I was still in Sibulan, that was in 2003, before we moved here in the New Jersey (USA) area, the water supply coming from the local water district was very disgusting. It is not only not potable, it is very murky not fit enough for our fishes in the aquarium to live, more so to be used for bathing or washing utensils. I do not know if this has changed after a two-year hiatus, but I think the water supply should be inspected, investigated, and corrected by the local authorities in that area considering that the bacteria S. typhi can be transmitted through water and food.

Hopefully under the leadership of our very good and hardworking Mayor Tony Renacia and of our very dedicated Municipal Health Officer Dr. Merlina Pappas, the problem would be immediately condoned.
