Negros Oriental to host BAP nat'l basketball tourney By Syril G. Repe
THE Province of Negros Oriental through the Provincial Sports Office and the Provincial Tourism Office will hold the National Finals of the 59th National Students Basketball Championship on February 27 to March 7, 2005 in the various sports complex and facilities in the second and third districts of the Province.
Governor George Arnaiz said that this will be the first time that the province will host a big national basketball tournament.
"We have decided to hold the games in various cities and municipalities to allow the delegates and officials to enjoy the scenic spots of the province," Governor Arnaiz said.
The province will spend more than half-a-million pesos to host the games. The governor said its non-monetary benefits such as tourism and investment promotions will be enhanced.
Arnaiz said the event, which will be covered daily by newspapers and television networks will give Negros Oriental wider prominence and national exposure.
Seeing action will be about 22 teams from the different regions in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Contesting the top post are 12 champion teams for the collegiate level, seven in the high school level, and three for basketball women's category.
The main event will be played at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center. The other games will be held at the Silliman and Foundation University Gyms, Zamboanguita Coliseum, Salma Sports Center in Tanjay City, Bais City Gym, Bayawan City Gym, and the Sta. Catalina Gym.
Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) general secretary Graham Lim is optimistic the national event will be successful.
