Bear kites win special kitefest awards
THE heat notwithstanding, thousands of people converge at Perdices Memorial Coliseum Sunday to join the 15th Dumaguete City leg of the 15th Bear Brand Kitefest, an annual event that saw two bear kites flying away with the special Superkite and Saranggola ni Bear Brand awards.
The Superkite award with a cash prize of P5,000 went to Danny T. Teroga's Baby Bear entry while the Sarranggola ni Bear Brand award went to Rose Peña Belciña's Second Baby of Mama Bear and Christopher D. Silot's Flying Sonoy each carrying a prize of P3,000.
Teroga's entry also won the Figure Kite Category, adult division, and the cash prize of P10,000.
The other special award, Theme Kite Award, went to Rhenee D. Ventusa with the entry Dumaguete City Boulevard sailing away with the P5,000 prize.
The superkite award represents the biggest flying kite in the figure category, the Saranggola ni Bear Brand goes to the kite entry from the elementary or high school division and the college or adult level, and the theme kite award goes to the best flying kite to represent the province or the city.
The other winners are: Family on-the-spot kite-making and kite flying division (P10,000)-Kapuso of the Villegas family; Adult Division, Figure Kite Category (P10,000)-Baby Bear of Teroga (1st), Birthday (P8,000)-Henry Y. Belcina (2nd); and Sea Lion (P6,000)-Luis Cerenio (3rd).
Flat Kite Category (Elementary Division): 1st (P5,000)-Tree of Life of David Payumo; 2nd (P4,000)-Bundle of Fruits of Ma. Eloise Antipolo; and 3rd (P3,000)-WASP of Dalton Mariano. (High School Division): 1st (P5,000)-Frog Man of John Romulo Siepert; 2nd (P4,000)-Bumble Bee of Jessie Paredes; and 3rd (P3,000)-Philippine Kite of Jessie A. Singco. (College Category): 1st (P6,000)-Giant Moth of Jan Paeldon; 2nd (P5,000)-Angel Fish of Jhon Karl Chua; and 3rd (P4,000)-Family Eagle of Alet Abregundo. (Adult Division): 1st (P10,000)-My Little Sunflower of Kent A. Miles: 2nd (P8,000)-Nestling of Edgar Chong; and 3rd (P5,000)-Japanese Roster of Hercules Salvador.
Geometric Kite Category (College Division): 1st (P8,000)-Sandata ng Pilipinas of Lester James Dingcong; 2nd (P6,000)-Totem of Nimrod Jann Reyes; and 3rd (P5,000)-Tinda ni Bear. (Adult Division): 1st (P8,000)-Rocket of Melvin B. Minao; 2nd (P6,000)-Flower of Jinnefer Balinas; and 3rd (P5,000)-World of Nestle of Cyrus Abello.
Figure Kite Category (College Division): 1st (P10,000)-Incredible Bronx of Edgardo Ticar; 2nd (P8,000)-Agouti W/Sneaky Lizard of Raffy Balinas; and 3rd (P5,000)-Flower Base of Argie Payumo.
A total of 873 entries joined the Dumaguete City kickoff of this year's edition of the country's biggest kite festival. After Dumaguete City, the 15th Bear Brand Kitefest, soaring with the theme "Lipad Na Sa Saya" will visit Linngayen on February 27; Tacloban on March 6; General Santos on March 13; Palawan on March 20; Baguio on April 3; Cagayan de Oro on April 10; Lucena on April 17; Davao on April 24; and Manila on May 15.
