'Sex trip' tourism, no-no in Negros Oriental: guv By Edmund Sestoso
NEGROS Oriental Governor George Arnaiz dismissed suggestions to integrate 'sex packages' in the province's tourism promotion program.
Arnaiz said his administration will not be a part of what he called an "immoral strategy" to lure domestic or particularly foreign visitors.
The suggestions surfaced at the height of the verbal tussle between the governor and mayors and Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano triggered by the latter's failure to include Negros Oriental in his department's and SMART Telecommunication's television tourism promotion campaign.
Arnaiz said except for night restaurants that offer wholesome entertainment, Dumaguete City has no red light districts.
"We are not particular with sex tourism because that is one thing we want to avoid," he said.
The governor agreed that many foreign tourists are attracted to night bars and places that cater to sex-related entertainment, but that they need not visit the province.
Negros Oriental, he said, is promoting "nature destination" featuring the province's scenic spots, caves, beaches, parks and wildlife reservation areas, lakes, and its white sand bar because it is environmentally friendly, wholesome, and good for family group visits.
Arnaiz said the province is opting for a unique strategy that will have positive effects among tourists.
