Guv foresees tricycles phased out By Edmund Sestoso
NEGROS Oriental Governor George Arnaiz projected the hundreds of tricycles in Dumaguete City locally known as pedicabs would gradually disappear from the streets in the next few years because of the faster and more convenient transport system.
Arnaiz said that as early as now, tricycle drivers must look for alternative livelihood sources or to organize themselves to be able to ask help from private and public funding agencies.
The governor said he could not determine as to when the mode of transportation will completely become obsolete but that he was sure they would be out of the streets in the "coming years".
An estimated 2,500 pedicabs ply Dumaguete City's narrow streets daily.
He said that it was inevitable that with the city's faster economic activity in the future, people would look for speedier and more convenient transportation.
For the meantime, Arnaiz advised pedicab drivers to organize and discipline themselves.
The governor said he supports the idea to have pedicabs accredited by tourism offices to protect visitors from "bad elements" who would prey on them.
"Natural kung dunay accreditation, duna dyuy seminar nga mahitabo, busa gikinahanglan ni," Arnaiz said.
