Perez: Norsu is one year old

JUNE 24, 2004 marked the legal existence of Negros Oriental State University (Norsu). Friday, June 24, 2005 marked the first anniversary of this only state university in Negros Oriental.
Third District Representative of the province of Negros Oriental, Honorable Herminio G. Teves, is the main sponsor of the House bill that made the conversion of Central Visayas Polytechnic College (CVPC) into what it is today, Norsu.
Norsu is the 36th state university in the Philippines. It has a student population of more than 20,000. It is the only academic institution in the province that has the lowest tuition and other fees, from P2,000 to P3,000 per semester.
As a brief background, on June 10, 2004, all the senators, with Congressman Teves as the main sponsor, approved and signed the 'conversion bill' in the House of Representatives for CVPC to become Norsu. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the bill into law, Republic Act 9299.
Dr. Henry A. Sojor is the first president of NORSU. This year's state university officials are led by Dr. Sojor and the four vice presidents: Dr. Victoria P. Dinopol, newly-designated vice president for academic affairs who is also dean of the Garduate School; Dr. Peter T. Dayot, vice president for planning, research and extension; Dr. Cecilia A. Abringe, vice president for administration; and Dr. Ponciano O. Julom, vice president for development and special concerns.
To mark the 1st Charter Day Anniversary of Norsu, a morning mass was held at the university gymnasium with the theme: Our Pride, Our Hope, Our Future.
Most Reverend John F. Du, Bishop of the Diocese of Dumaguete presided with a special message on Saint John the Baptist. Norsu's anniversary falls on June 24, the same date as the Feast of Saint John
Norsu has two main campuses, at the Capitol area and in Barangay Bajumpandan. Its satellite campuses are in Guihulngan, Bais City, Pamplona, Siaton, and Bayawan-Santa Catalina.
