Ports authority to put up facility in Siaton
By Edmund Sestoso

THE local office of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) based in Dumaguete City is now getting ready for a roll-on, roll-off (Roro) port facility in Barangay Bonbonon, Siaton town.

Port Manager Noemi Calderon said the Provincial Board has already endorsed the project proposal to the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) recently.

Barangay Bonbonon in the same town was chosen because aside from being a coastal area, it has long been used by sea crafts operators for the safe, immediate and appropriate destination in the transportation of goods, persons and products from the island of Negros to the neighboring islands.

Port Manager Calderon also pointed out that the local government unit supportive of their efforts has established Bonbonon as a sound entry point and destination to the mainland of the province for commuters, investors, foreign and local tourists.

The Roro concept was part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo which includes improvements of wharves, piers and establishment of economic centers within the area including improvement of roads ands bridges to connect the three main island of the country Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Other areas in the province have already their respective Roro port facilities, which includes the one in Amlan, San Jose, Sibulan, Guihulngan and the others are now on the construction stage while some is already near completion.
