10T hectares in Negros Oriental irrigated By Rachel M. Nessia
AT LEAST 10,000 hectares of agricultural lands in Negros Oriental are now irrigated either by small water impounding projects (SWIP) or small reservoir irrigation projects (SRIP).
Engineer Eduardo Eso of the Provincial Office of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) said the presence of the irrigation projects lessened the impact of the abnormal weather phenomenon El Niño on rice production.
NIA is however concentrating on reservoir projects because these source water from rivers.
The two existing SRIPs in the province are the 650-hectare project in Calango and 1,000 hectares in Nasig-id, both in Zamboanguita.
The Nasig-id project is newly completed.
All towns and cities in the province have irrigation projects except for Dauin where a SRIP is undergoing construction under an Asian Development Bank program.
The project is targeted to be completed in 200 and will cover eight barangays.
The dam site is in Barangay Magsaysay. The water source is Lipayo River.
