Crack in Tanjay's ruling party denied By Neil C. Rio
A LEADING member of the ruling BTS political party in Tanjay City denied published and broadcast reports that it is showing cracks ahead of the 2007 elections.
Tanjay City Councilor Erkki Lozarita said the reports "are baseless" and aimed only at destroying the harmonios relationship between Vice Mayor Lawrence Teves and Mayor Baltazar Salma.
Based on reports, Teves and Lozarita have started preparing for the elections as running mates opposite their party mates.
The reports said Salma was incensed over the delay in the approval of the city's staffing pattern that would allow the opening of additional items in the City Government including a promotion to regular status of some 80 job order workers and casuals.
Lozarita denied that the City Council deliberately delayed the measure. In fact, he said the ordinance was now approved and that it's delay was not because of any political maneuverings but because of resubmission.
He explained that after the measure reached the City Council's committee level, it was returned to the Human Resource and Management Office and from there it went to the Office of the City Administrator.
By that time, Lozarita said, the council had to act on many concerns to accommodate the requests from departments.
"We did not delay the measure...we waited for it because it would be for the best of everyone," he said.
On the issue that he was aiming to run for vice mayor in 2007, Lozarita said that his option is open but that as a partyman, he adheres to party decisions.
At the moment, he said, the members of the City Council led by Vice Mayor Teves continue to support Mayor Salma knowing him to be a good leader and a sincere public servant.
