Fisheries council cautions public on imported meat By Maricar Aranas
THE Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC) cautioned the public against buying imported poultry meat, fish, and other foodstuff from countries with cases of bird flu.
Efren de la Cruz, RAFC chairman, issued the advice following the illegal entry of imported meat into Cebu by way of its seaport.
De la Cruz, however, clarified that it could not yet be confirmed if the meat import came from neighboring countries with bird flu cases.
He said the regional office of the Department of Agriculture has not authorized importers to bring in imported meat to Cebu.
The RAFC head advised the public to take precaution over the possibility that imported meat has entered Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental.
De la Cruz clarified that meat contaminated with the bird flu virus could still infect humans and animals.
He said meat importers must observe proper quarantine rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, City Health Officer Erlinda Cabrera warned that bird flu can cause death. Dr. Cabrera explained that of the 200 known flu viruses, one is found in birds.
The City Health Office has not received any health advisory declaring a bird flu alert.
