Negros Oriental's disaster plans in place
By Rachel Nessia

THE Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) here has put in place disaster management plans to prepare the public for any manmade or natural disasters that could strike the province in the coming months.

Assistant Provincial Planning Officer Joy Gongob said this in Wednesday's Kapihan sa PIA forum at the Bethel Guest House held to mark National Disaster Consciousness Month this July.

This year's theme is 'Safe Ka Ba? Programa Laban sa kalamidad Tungo sa Pag-unlad'.

Gongob said the plans aims to counter the effects of La Niña, El Niño, and anti-terrorism and bomb threats.

PDCC integrated the plans of its three management units for a counter-disaster management plan.

Engineer Ricardo Baculad of the Provincial Engineer's Office that spearheads PDCC's transportation committee, said the three district engineering offices in the province are prepared to carry out transportation help in case of disasters.

A disaster relief plan is also in place, said Provincial Social Welfare Officer Alice Legarde, who heads the relief and rehabilitation committee of the council.

Lagarde said the Provincial Government has a stockpile of food and used clothing from the Regional Social Welfare Office.

The identified disaster-prone areas in the province are Bayawan City, Santa Catalina, Siaton, Guihulngan, and the hinterlands of Pamplona, Bais City, and Tanjay City.
