P204M geothermal exploration in Dauin to start in November
By Jimmy P. Abayon

A GEOTHERMAL exploration in the hinterlands of the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental is tentatively scheduled to start in November this year, fact sheets released by the Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) said.

Based on the information sheets, the exploration project, estimated to cost P204.81 will be classified into civil works, well drilling, well testing, and project abandonment categories.

The civil works stage involves the rehabilitation of the existing access road to the exploration pad known as DN-1D, construction of a new road linking DN-1D to the proposed pad site, installation of a water supply system from selected water sources to the proposed pad site, and opening and preparation of the 1.5-hectare DN-3D pad.

DN-3D pad will serve as the working area and workers' campsite.

The four activities are scheduled to last until March or April next year.

The drilling of the exploratory well will start after the civil works, in April 2006 and succeeding wells will be drilled from 2007 onward.

The project aims to further explore and delineate the geothermal resources beneath the Dauin sector by drilling three exploratory wells.

The exploration area is located within the Southern Negros Geothermal Reservation of Negros Oriental.

PNOC-EDC said the project is part of the Department of Energy's national thrust to increase the country's energy self-sufficiency from 45 percent in 2001 to 57.1 percent this year, and eventually 61.5 percent by 2010.

The potential 20 megawatt Dauin geothermal sector has been seen as a sustainable and environment-friendly power supply source for Central Visayas whose power demand has been projected to rise by 5.6 percent between 2005 to 2014.
