Overpass fronting provincial hospital eyed By Edmund Sestoso
THE City Council proposed the construction of two pedestrian overpasses at the area fronting the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) and the area fronting St. Paul's University to avert traffic accidents.
Councilor Manuel Patrimonio, principal proponent, said he has observed while commuting daily along north national highway of bottleneck traffic congestions along the highway fronting NOPH and St. Paul University.
"During peak hours, traffic usually is at standstill in those areas," Patrimonio said.
He added that despite heavy traffic congestion, individuals continue to cross the road further impeding traffic flow and resulted to accidents.
At Saint Paul's, he said, students compete with vehicle traffic either in going to school or going home.
The city councilor said public safety demands that something should be done to address the problem.
Patrimonio explained that if overpasses had worked well in other cities, there was no reason why the structures could not be done in Dumaguete.
He said the city council has passed a resolution urging 2nd District Representative Emilio Macias II and Governor George Arnaiz to study the proposal.
