Rodeo competitions to feature new events By Rachel M. Nessia
THE Buglasan Rodeo and Horseshow Competition at Perdices Coliseum, Dumaguete City this October 14-16 will be three days of fun, danger, and excitement with new additional events.
Provincial veterinarian Dr. Antonio Mutia said this year's rodeo, the third since the start of the festival, would feature a Kiddie Carambola.
"Children from 10 to 12 years old will show off their cowboy skills like pampatumba sa baka during the four-person and two-person kiddie carambolas," Mutia said during the recent Kapihan sa PIA for the rodeo.
For an entrance fee of P5 each day, the audience can watch rodeo events and get the chance to win special items to be raffled for the audience while children can ride horses especially hired for the event.
Bronco riding is also an added event this year wherein participants will restrain wild, untamed horses.
"This is similar to bull riding only that in this event, the horses haven't been ridden yet, fresh from the ranch," Mutya said assuring that participants would be safe.
"We only allow certified players who are already skilled in rodeo events. There is also a standby medical team in case of emergencies," he added.
A total of 15 teams from Visayas and Mindanao will participate in this year's rodeo competition with teams coming from as far as Marawi City.
Negros Oriental is the only province in Central Visayas that holds a rodeo event each year and because of this, cowboy teams from other provinces are coming in droves.
"I had to turn down five teams this year because we can only accommodate 15 teams," Mutia said.
Negros Oriental is also the only province in the country with a considerable number of ranches.
