Shortage of hotel rooms expected during festival By Victor L. Camion
NEGROS Oriental officials projected an acute hotel room shortage in Dumaguete City during the Buglasan Festival of Festivals this month with the expected influx of more domestic and foreign visitors.
Governor George Arnaiz together with Provincial Board Member Mariant Escaño Villegas said they expected more foreign visitors because of the success of the Yagyag festival that was featured during the World Exposition in Nagoya, Japan the previous week.
Yagyag, an original Sibulan festival from Barangay Cangmating, won last year's national festival of festivals contest and represented the Philippines at the Nagoya international exposition.
"Giingnan namo sila nga sample pa lang na sa mga pasundayag atol sa Buglasan," said Villegas in a press conference held at Don Atilano Resturant recently.
Arnaiz suggested Dumaguete City residents could accommodate the local and foreign visitors as what happened during the centennial anniversary celebration of Silliman University in 2001 when all hotels and pension houses in the city overflowed with guests.
"Kanang mga kaila nato sa atong balay padayonon aron nga ang mga foreigners maoy maserbisyohan sa mga hotels," said the governor in the same forum.
Meantime, the two officials described Yagyag's success in Japan as "hitting two birds with one stone".
Arnaiz suggested the four provinces of Central Visayas should come up with a tie-up tourism campaign.
Arnaiz said Negros Oriental is adopting what he called a "cross tourism" campaign linking the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, and Negros Occidental.
Under the campaign visitors from Cebu where an international airport is located, would be given a tour package that would take them to visit Bohol or Negros Oriental and then proceed to Negros Occidental.
Likewise, a similar package would be offered to visitors from Bacolod City, where another international airport is located, to see Negros Oriental and then proceed to Bohol and Cebu.
