Kids hold convention By Rachel M. Nessia
AROUND 100 children from eight local government units in Negros Oriental joined this year's Children and Youth Convention held Friday at Bethel Guest House.
The convention is an annual event to celebrate Children's Month this October.
This year's observance focused on the Child and Youth Participation Rights, an activity simultaneously undertaken by partner agencies in the province.
The participants were Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils from elementary schools in Amlan, Sibulan, Pamplona, Ayungon, Tayasan, Sta. Catalina, Dauin, and Dumaguete City.
The areas are among those identified under the continuing program of the Country Program for Children (CPC), which is now on its 6th phase of implementation.
The child friendly movement in Negros Oriental first started in 1999 after the United Nations Children's Fund chose it as a pilot site for the 5th Country Program for Children (CPC 5).
Meanwhile, about 160 kids participated in a unique sports fest for children Friday at the grounds near the Silliman University gymnasium.
The first of its kind in Negros Oriental, the Sports Fest, also to celebrate Children's Month, was participated in by 'children at risk'.
"These are the street kids, orphans, disadvantaged children, children from indigenous communities, and children with disabilities under the care of GP Rehab Foundation," said Anna Lou Suan, project director of GP, Great Physician Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc.
The foundation is a rehabilitation project for children in Dumaguete City offering free services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and special education for children with intellectual and physical disabilities.
The activity is a joint event of GP Rehab Foundation and Negros Oriental Children's Network, a non-government organization in Negros Oriental that is working for children.
