RP diva sees hope for OPM By Jimmy P. Abayon
SHERYN Regis, the "Crystal Voice of Asia" admitted that original Pilipino music (OPM) could not compete with foreign English composition in the country's music market but she is optimistic that with more support local songs still have the chance to change the situation.
In a long distance telephone interview, Sheryn said Filipino singers and composers had no choice but to use familiar foreign beats to capture local interest.
"Ang ato, gaya gaya na lang. Ang mga kanta familiar sa mga foreign songs. Usa kini ka paagi aron usab ma-capture nato ang listeners' ears," the host said.
She said there is a need for local radio stations and the media to promote local songs as in the past.
Through this, Regis said, Filipinos would learn to appreciate OPM more than foreign compositions that dominate the airwaves.
On November 19, Sheryn will be in Dumaguete City for a concert at Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.
She had been dubbed as "The Powerbelter" in ABS-CBN's search for the Star in a Million, "The Shining Diva", and "The Crystal Voice of Asia" after landing in the second place in the Voice of Asia competition in Kazakhstan last year.
