Child domestic labor in NegOr down By Maricar Aranas
CHILD domestic labor in Negros Oriental has gone down, according to the last survey conducted by the International Labor Organization.
This was bared during the recent consultation and advocacy workshop on child domestic labor sponsored by the St. Maria Goretti Foundation at Plaza Maria Luisa.
The foundation is the committee in-charge of the Children in Need of Special Protection of the sixth country program for children (CPC-6) of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef).
Provincial Social Welfare Officer Alice Legarde, said CPC 6 is currently focusing on six "worst form" of child labor in Negros Oriental that include mining and quarrying, domestic work, pyrotechnic, commercial sexual exploitation, deep sea fishing, and sugar cane labor.
A survey conducted by Silliman University last year showed that of the eight forms of child labor, the sugar cane sector, domestic labor, and fishing topped the number of child labor cases.
Sugar cane work registered 1,760 cases, domestic child labor, 753, and deep sea fishing or paaling, 132.
The child labor group Visayan Forum in Region 7 said the Philippines has a 9.7 percent child domestic workers with the Visayas region listed as the second biggest exporter of child domestic laborers in the country. The northern Luzon regions remain on top.
